Ekiti State Cracks Down on Improper Waste Disposal to Protect Public Health

The Ekiti State Government has issued a stern warning to residents regarding improper waste disposal practices that pose significant risks to public health and contribute to environmental nuisance. This directive comes in response to growing concerns about activities that have the potential to degrade the environment and create unhygienic living conditions within the state.

The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Tosin Aluko-Ajisafe, strongly condemned the common practice of discharging wastewater directly into drainage channels. She highlighted that such actions are not only irresponsible but also lead to the generation of offensive odours, which adversely affect the quality of life for residents.

According to a statement released in Ado Ekiti on Friday, the warning follows complaints from residents of Third Extension, GRA, Ado Ekiti, who reported unpleasant and obnoxious odours emanating from certain areas. These complaints prompted immediate action from the state authorities.

In response, a joint task force comprising personnel from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources alongside security agencies conducted an on-site inspection of the affected locations. Their investigation revealed that accumulated kitchen waste, which had been evacuated from a catch pit, was being improperly disposed of into a public drain. This practice was identified as the primary source of the offensive odour disturbing the community.

Environmental and Health Implications

Improper disposal of kitchen waste and wastewater into drainage systems can have severe environmental and public health consequences.
