Teesside Football Community Honors Fallen Cleveland Police Officers

Football fans and players across Teesside came together to honor the memory of two Cleveland Police officers who tragically lost their lives in a road collision. The community's heartfelt tributes reflected the deep respect and affection held for PC Matthew Blades and PC Tom Clough.

On the early morning of 22 August, PC Blades and PC Clough were involved in a fatal head-on collision on the A66 near Middlesbrough. Their police vehicle collided with another car traveling the wrong way, resulting in the deaths of the two officers and five occupants of the other vehicle.

Before Middlesbrough’s Championship match against West Bromwich Albion at Riverside Stadium, a poignant minute’s applause was observed. Supporters and players alike paid their respects as images of the officers were displayed on the stadium screens, creating a solemn atmosphere that united everyone present in remembrance.

Tributes extended beyond the professional game to grassroots football, where Seaton Carew FC and FC Hartlepool held a commemorative event. Marcus Newing, a coach at Seaton Carew FC and a close friend of PC Blades, described the past week as "horrendous." However, he also highlighted the comfort found in the widespread support from across the country. Mr Newing spoke warmly of PC Blades, emphasizing his qualities both on and off the pitch.

"He was a devoted father and husband who always put others first," said Mr Newing. "Matthew was giving to everybody, had a smile that could light up a room, and loved being around people. He had a playful spirit and was as daft as a brush, which made him a beloved figure in the community."
