NCC Advocates Boost in Local Tech Investment to Enhance Nigeria’s Digital Sovereignty
The NCC urges increased investment in homegrown technologies to reduce reliance on foreign software and promote Nigeria’s digital independence.
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has emphasized the urgent need to increase investment in locally developed technologies as a strategic move to minimize Nigeria’s reliance on foreign software and bolster the country’s digital sovereignty.
At the closing ceremony of the fourth NCC Hackathon Live Show held in Abuja, Dr Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, delivered this important message. Represented by Executive Commissioner for Stakeholder Management, Rimini Makama, Maida highlighted the significance of nurturing indigenous technological innovations that address Nigeria’s unique challenges and needs, particularly for persons with disabilities and other digitally excluded groups.
“Nigeria must shift from being predominantly dependent on imported software to becoming a hub for technologies designed specifically for local contexts,” Maida remarked. This transition is critical to ensuring that digital solutions are not only relevant but also sustainable within the Nigerian ecosystem.
The hackathon showcased a variety of cutting-edge technology solutions, including artificial intelligence-powered speech-to-text applications, voice-enabled public platforms, accessible USSD systems, and inclusive mobile applications. These innovations are not merely prototypes but foundational elements that underpin Nigeria’s journey toward technological self-reliance.
“By investing in a homegrown, universally accessible codebase, we guarantee that Nigeria’s digital economy remains operational, secure, affordable, and responsive to the country’s realities, while being resilient to external shocks,” Maida added.
The NCC’s call to action extends beyond technologists and innovators. Maida urged venture capitalists, telecommunications operators, and state governments to collaborate and provide the necessary financial backing and partnerships to scale these innovations from concept to widespread implementation.
Such investment is pivotal to ensuring that Nigeria can foster an inclusive digital environment where citizens of all abilities can participate fully in the digital economy. The NCC’s vision is to transform the nation’s tech landscape from passive consumption to active creation, empowering local developers and entrepreneurs to lead in assistive technology and beyond.
The successful outcomes of the hackathon demonstrate the potential of homegrown solutions to bridge accessibility gaps and promote digital inclusion. These technologies not only improve quality of life for marginalized groups but also contribute to the broader goal of economic diversification and technological advancement.
In conclusion, the NCC’s advocacy for increased investment in local technologies is a strategic imperative for Nigeria’s sustainable digital future. By fostering innovation tailored to indigenous needs and encouraging multi-sector partnerships, Nigeria can achieve greater autonomy in its digital infrastructure and services, ensuring resilience and inclusivity for all citizens.
