Presidency Assures Swift Action on Benin-Agbor-Asaba Expressway Incident

The Presidency has addressed concerns regarding the recent failure of the Benin-Agbor-Asaba Expressway, emphasizing that the incident is isolated and does not reflect the overall state of federal road projects across Nigeria. In response to the issue, the Federal Government acted swiftly by deploying key stakeholders to the affected section and demanding immediate corrective measures from the contractor responsible.

Sunday Dare, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Public Communications, provided this clarification during an interview on Channels Television. He explained that the President has directed a comprehensive redesign and total reconstruction of the road segment to prevent recurrence of such failures.

Highlighting the nature of road construction challenges, Dare noted that road projects can experience difficulties during the rainy season, which can temporarily affect the quality and durability of newly constructed roads. He urged the public and media not to generalize this isolated incident as a reflection of the condition of all federal roads.

"I think that first, these are isolated cases. And we all know by the nature of road construction, during rainy season, you encounter problems like this," Dare said, reassuring citizens that several other federal road projects are either completed or progressing smoothly without similar setbacks.

The Federal Government’s proactive approach involved immediate site inspections and engagement with contractors to ensure that remedial work is carried out promptly. This decisive action demonstrates the administration’s commitment to maintaining infrastructure quality and safeguarding road users' safety.

In addition to addressing the immediate failure, the directive for a full redesign and reconstruction signals a strategic effort to enhance the durability and resilience of the Benin-Agbor-Asaba Expressway. This key transportation corridor facilitates significant economic activity and mobility between major cities, making its reliability critical for regional development.

While isolated setbacks may arise in large-scale infrastructure projects, the Presidency’s transparent communication and prompt interventions aim to maintain public confidence in ongoing road development initiatives. The government continues to prioritize infrastructure as a cornerstone for national growth, with continued investments and oversight to improve transport networks nationwide.
