Federal Government Emphasizes Ongoing Care for Cancer Patients Beyond Curative Treatment
The Federal Government urges healthcare facilities to ensure continuous care for cancer patients, even when curative treatment is no longer possible.
The Federal Government has issued a strong advisory to healthcare facilities across the nation, emphasizing the importance of continued care for cancer patients who require hospital-based support. This directive highlights that patients should not be discharged prematurely simply because curative treatment options have been exhausted.
Dr Uchechukwu Nwokwu, National Coordinator of the National Cancer Control Plan under the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, articulated these concerns during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja. He stressed that the management of cancer patients must focus not only on curing the disease but also on ensuring sustained medical support and appropriate care at every stage.
According to Dr Nwokwu, when a healthcare facility cannot provide further curative interventions, it should not automatically discharge the patient without putting in place arrangements for the continuation of care. Instead, healthcare providers are encouraged to establish effective referral systems, ensuring that patients are transferred to other facilities equipped to deliver the necessary support without interruption.
Ensuring Seamless Care Transitions
The Federal Government’s position underscores the critical need for seamless transitions within the healthcare system for patients with advanced cancer. Proper coordination between hospitals ensures that these patients continue to receive specialized treatments such as palliative care, symptom management, and psychological support, which are integral to quality of life.
Dr Nwokwu pointed out that the lack of available curative therapies should not signal an end to hospital-based care. Instead, it should trigger a timely referral to institutions with the capacity to manage complex cases, thus preventing gaps in treatment and avoiding unnecessary distress for patients and their families.
Strengthening the National Cancer Control Plan
This directive aligns with the broader goals of the National Cancer Control Plan, which aims to enhance the quality and accessibility of cancer care services nationwide. By advocating for continued hospital-based care and well-coordinated referrals, the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare seeks to improve patient outcomes and support networks.
The plan encourages healthcare providers to adopt a patient-centered approach, recognizing that cancer treatment extends beyond curing the disease. It includes managing symptoms, providing emotional support, and ensuring dignity and comfort throughout the patient’s journey.
The Role of Healthcare Facilities
Healthcare facilities are urged to assess their capabilities honestly and communicate openly with patients and families regarding treatment options. Where limitations exist, prompt referrals to specialized centers should be made without delay. This approach fosters trust and ensures that patients are not left without critical care simply due to infrastructural or resource constraints.
In conclusion, the Federal Government’s call serves as a reminder that cancer care is a continuum. When curative treatments reach their limits, the responsibility of healthcare providers shifts towards maintaining quality of life through ongoing support and comprehensive care coordination. This commitment is essential for addressing the complex needs of cancer patients and enhancing the overall effectiveness of the healthcare system.
