Lagos Public Hospitals Face Surge in Patient Visits Amid Staffing Challenges

Lagos State’s public hospitals have experienced a significant surge in patient patronage, with outpatient attendance doubling over the past six months. This sharp increase has placed immense pressure on healthcare facilities, particularly as the sector grapples with a shortage of healthcare workers, a situation exacerbated by the ongoing brain drain phenomenon.

The Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, shared insights during a Friday interview with ARISE NEWS, highlighting the intense strain on doctors and other medical professionals working in public health institutions across Lagos. According to Prof. Abayomi, the rise in patient numbers has been unprecedented, with some facilities seeing thousands of patients daily.

“In the last six months, our outpatient patronage has doubled in our public health facilities, including LASUTH, Ikorodu, and Lagos Island General Hospital,” he explained. “The volume of patients is such that private hospitals cannot match this level of patronage.”

The Commissioner attributed this growing demand largely to the escalating costs of healthcare services in private facilities. As medical expenses rise, many residents find it increasingly difficult to afford private care, resulting in a shift towards public hospitals where services are more accessible and affordable.

Rising Costs and Accessibility

Prof. Abayomi emphasized the economic challenges faced by residents, stating, “While the cost of care is going up, the ability to buy that care is relatively stagnant.” This economic imbalance is driving many to seek medical attention at public hospitals, which are often the only viable option for a large portion of Lagos State’s population.

The financial pressures have also led some residents to turn to informal healthcare providers, a trend that raises concerns about the quality and safety of care received outside regulated medical establishments.

Healthcare Worker Shortages and Brain Drain

The surge in patient numbers comes at a time when Lagos’ healthcare sector is contending with a critical shortage of skilled workers. The brain drain, whereby experienced doctors and healthcare professionals emigrate in search of better opportunities abroad, compounds the challenges faced by the public health system.

This shortage not only limits the capacity of hospitals to efficiently handle the increased workload but also places existing staff under significant physical and emotional strain. Prof. Abayomi acknowledged this challenge, noting that medical teams are working tirelessly to manage the influx despite resource constraints.

Impact on Public Health Facilities

The sudden rise in outpatient attendance in public hospitals like LASUTH (Lagos State University Teaching Hospital), General Hospital Ikorodu, and Lagos Island General Hospital highlights the growing dependence on government health services. These facilities, traditionally overstretched, now face heightened demand, necessitating urgent attention to infrastructure, staffing, and resource allocation.

Healthcare professionals have been adapting to the increased workload, but sustaining this level of service delivery requires strategic interventions to bolster capacity and improve working conditions for staff.

Community Responses and Government Interventions

The Lagos State Government has been urged to implement measures aimed at addressing both the staffing shortages and the infrastructural needs of public hospitals. Enhanced funding, recruitment drives, and retention strategies for healthcare workers are critical to stabilizing the system.

Additionally, efforts to regulate informal healthcare providers and educate the public on safe medical practices are necessary to safeguard health outcomes within the community.

Residents’ growing reliance on public health facilities underscores the importance of accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare services. As Lagos continues to expand economically and demographically, the sustainability of its healthcare system remains a key priority for policymakers and stakeholders alike.
