A donation exceeding N100 million alongside 408 bags of assorted food items was provided to victims of bandit attacks and a devastating boat accident occurring within Wurno and Goronyo Local Government Areas.
This intervention was formally announced on Monday, coinciding with visits by a high-powered government delegation. Leading the team was Senator Aliyu Wamakko, the state APC leader and former governor, who engaged directly with affected communities in Dinawa, Birjingo, and Gorau to offer condolences and support.
At Dinawa, families of seven individuals tragically killed in a bandit attack each received a cash grant of N1 million. Additionally, every family was given two bags of maize, two bags of millet, and one bag of rice to help alleviate immediate needs. The five injured victims from this attack were also supported with N250,000 each, accompanied by similar food provisions.
In Birjingo, where three people lost their lives in a related incident, the state government extended the same financial and food assistance to the bereaved families. Each received N1 million alongside two bags each of maize and millet, plus one bag of rice. Six injured persons from this community were also granted N250,000 each and corresponding food aid.
Particularly tragic was the boat accident in Gorau, which claimed the lives of 65 people. In response, the government provided the families of the deceased with N1 million each. They were also supplied with two bags of maize, two bags of millet, and one bag of rice to help support their immediate sustenance and recovery.
During the condolence visits, Senator Wamakko, representing Governor Ahmed Aliyu, conveyed deep sorrow over the incidents. He reassured residents of Sokoto State that the government remains committed to supporting security agencies and other stakeholders in their ongoing efforts to improve safety and reduce insecurity within the state.
This multi-faceted assistance underscores the government’s resolve to provide immediate relief and long-term support to communities affected by violence and accidents. It also reflects a broader commitment to fostering resilience among vulnerable populations in Sokoto State.
