U.S. Strikes 3 Iranian Tankers After Navy Ships Came Under Fire

The U.S. military hit 3 Iranian oil tankers on Saturday after Iranian forces fired missiles at American Navy ships.

What happened
On September 5, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard launched ballistic missiles at 2 U.S. Navy warships in the Gulf. The ships — an aircraft carrier and a destroyer — managed to dodge the attacks. No American sailors were hurt.

Hours later, the U.S. hit back. Central Command said it targeted 3 Iranian crude oil tankers:
- The M/T Downy — disabled off Kharg Island, Iran’s main oil export point
- The M/T Stark 1 — disabled near Jask
- The M/T Kylo — destroyed in the Gulf of Oman after the crew got off

The U.S. says these tankers were part of a secret network used to fund the IRGC and its groups in the region.

The message
Admiral Brad Cooper put it bluntly:
“If you shoot at two of our ships, we will impose an even higher economic cost — taking out three of yours.”

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth echoed it online: “If Iran shoots at U.S. ships, we will destroy and sink their oil tankers.”

Iran fired back with warnings too. State media said if the U.S. keeps targeting Iranian ships, Iran’s strikes on U.S. vessels will get “more severe.” Tasnim news reported that 4 missiles hit a tanker near Kharg Island, but the crew was evacuated and no one died.

Why this matters
This is the latest flare-up in the Persian Gulf. After a month of quiet, the U.S. and Iran have traded attacks this week. The U.S. says it’s also blocking Iranian oil shipments to cut off funding.

With Kharg Island being Iran’s biggest oil terminal, strikes there could hit global oil supplies — and that’s why everyone’s watching this closely.
